The Wine List
I was always a lover of wine, but I was always a dubious reader of those little sayings littered all over Pinterest... "Wine. Because parenting.". I always wondered how a parent to young children could possibly get away with drinking on a school night, or want to for that matter. Surely responsible parenting did not involve a fridge full of Sauvignon? Surely the fulfillment of having beautiful, healthy, happy children negated the need for midweek Malbec and Prosecco was still only for special occasions?
I would definitely not be one of those Mothers. My fridge would be full of homemade elderflower tonic - we would grow it ourselves or forage on our weekly forest walks. My little cherubs would be able to identify chamomile for tea, and wild garlic for their pesto that we would store in cute jars with fabric gingham covers. Um... yeah, right. Then I actually became a parent, and suddenly I seem to speak a universal, not-so-secret language and I understand why wine was invented in the first place.
Congratulations on your newborn and not being pregnant anymore! Wine.
Yay, you've established breastfeeding! You know what helps you chill and in turn, baby? Wine.
Baby is 1 week old, you're smashing it. Wine.
Haven't slept in 6 months and you hear phantom crying when you go for a wee? Wine.
Sleep regressions. Wine.
Teething. Wine.
Growth spurts. Wine.
You get the picture...
Now don't get me wrong I am not, and do not advocate, getting smashed off my face every night or every weekend or whatever, but I do enjoy my wine now probably more than ever. I only have one (two) glasses when I do decide to have some, and rather than seeing it as a coping mechanism (which is not good - if you are in this place it might be worth considering talking to someone) I see it as a very grown up version of a gold star.
You were a Mother today, well freaking done. Wine.
I know what I like, so I've listed here what works for me but I sometimes try new things (let's not lie, I buy what's on offer) so will update as I go, Happy quaffing!
